Meet Kimberly Rae Hansen
The about me section has to be one of the more difficult things to write about. I would much rather talk about you, or art, scarves or hand bags. So in brief…I am an artist, a fashion accessories designer and sometimes writer. A wife, a mother, a daughter. A dreamer, a cup half full life liver, a sometimes procrastinator. And a bit of a blogaphob! I will try to update regularly, try to keep it interesting. By all means, add your two cents worth. It is why I am here!
People often ask me how I got into fractals, why I create fractal art. I discovered fractals quite by accident. February 1999, I had a debilitating car accident, which by all intents and purposes should have killed me. It did not. I am too stubborn for that! I did not walk away from it either, however. I twisted my T-4 vertebrae in my back up over T-5 and broke the bone. I live my life from a wheelchair now, spinal cord injured just as Christopher Reeves was. Only his break was in his neck while mine is in my upper back.
I used to be a massage therapist and postal worker prior to my injury. I could not longer do either job. I was on the computer a lot. Friends who lived out of state told me about a web site called DeviantArt, and suggested I set up a free account. I laughed and told them I was not artistic, but they insisted it would be a good way to keep in touch, to post photos of family, to see the kids grow from a distance. I agreed.
I spent time browsing other people’s DeviantArt galleries and kept getting drawn to these things called “fractals.” I was fascinated with the shapes, the colors. I finally got the nerve to send a private message to one of the artists I most admired, and asked if he would educate me on what fractals were and how he created them. He responded with a list of free fractal software, and the invitation to pick his brain any time I wanted. I began playing. And something just CLICKED. I was in love!
I moved from freeware to more intensive, artistic friendly, paid software and created fractals as just a hobby for years. In 2006, my husband talked me into turning my passion into a business. And the rest is history!
I do not have years of formal artistic training. I am a self-taught visual artist. My vision has been my life’s journey. I have always been creating in one way shape or another. My first artistic love in life was with words. I write poetry, prose, and stories. I have explored theater, dance, and photography. My parents are professional photographers, my mom an artist, my sister musically included. Artistic expression and appreciation were a part of my every day world growing up. I wandered away from those roots for a time. I might not have ever discovered this latent, artistic ability had I not had my car accident. I would never have slowed down to learn, let alone find them online. It fills me up like nothing else, however. I am so very blessed at this second chance at life. A life full of math in color!
